George Martinez had a vision for Academic Tutoring Services, Inc. (ATS) in 2005- to provide free supplemental educational services to low income students throughout California, contracting with school districts affected by the 2002 “No Child Left Behind Act”. He met with Jim McGovern to develop a successful business plan and apply for funding, as well as discuss how to conduct credentialed teacher recruitment. After multiple revisions, the business plan was ready for lender submission.

Martinez began the application process with the Santa Cruz Community Credit Union and received an initial loan in 2006 for $100K to allow for timely payment of payroll.

Martinez happily reported this quarter that they had hired 2 full time and 50 part time employees and had $515K in gross sales in the first year. ATS also raised equity capital of $200K. Currently, ATS is contracted with 15 school districts and plans for further expansion in 2007-2008.
